IIT Gandhinagar says “NO” to sexual harassment
Facility is available to EVERYONE - men and women alike!

Did you ever feel unwelcome, manipulated or threatened in to a situation that left you wondering about your self worth, and not knowing what to do? Harassment of any kind – sexual or not – goes beyond one’s basic right to live with dignity, and that is a BIG no-no at IIT Gandhinagar. “While we believe that we are building a kind, congenial community of like minded individuals – all focused on the pursuit of knowledge for the betterment of ourselves, our community, country and the world, we want to make sure that help is available to anyone, at any time, if someone makes you feel harassed,” says Director Sudhir Jain.

Cell And Resource for Everyone (CARE) -- whose primary mission is to provide guidelines for protection from sexual harassment and basic right to live with dignity; and to handle related complaints received by, or referred to, the CARE. -- has been formed under the Convenership of Dr. Joycee Mekie, Professor of Electrical Engineering at the institute. The CARE includes seven additional members - five female and two male, as follows:

  • Ms. Aditi Dighe, Student Representative
  • Dr. Deepa Shah, Medical Practitioner
  • Dr. Jaison A. Manjaly, Professor
  • Ms. Jasbir Thadani, Counselor
  • Dr. Manmohan Pandey, Professor
  • Dr. Radha Parikh, Professor, DA-IICT *
  • Ms. Swati Verma, Student Representative

* Except for Dr. Parikh, the remaining members are directly associated with IIT Gandhinagar.

Although the Supreme Court guidelines for “Cell And Resource for Everyone (CARE)” are geared only towards women, IIT Gandhinagar has broadened the CARE’s charter to include all members of the IIT community regardless of their sex. “All students, staff and faculty members of IIT Gandhinagar should feel free to contact me or any of the other Cell members, in full confidence that the matter will be handled professionally and discreetly,” said Convener Mekie. Many a times, the harasser is unaware of the impact their behavior has on other people, and once they are made aware of it, the harassment stops. “But we do not want to take any chances.”
