Nurture & Empower Entrepreneurial Ventures (NEEV) is an IIT Gandhinagar community outreach program aimed at the grassroots level to help promote entrepreneurship and livelihood generation. There is tremendous potential in the local community for various small-scale entrepreneurship, self-employment and other livelihood generating activities, but this potential is not fully realized due to limited resources and lack of awareness. IIT Gandhinagar (IITGN) perceives that it can help bridge this gap and make a meaningful impact through training, mentoring and providing networking opportunities. As a part of this mission, the NEEV program was established in 2014 to engage within its own as well as the surrounding community.
Entrepreneurship Development Workshop
The NEEV program conducts four to five day workshops that cover the core topics such as idea generation, market research, maintaining cash book, business arithmetic, making and presenting business plans, marketing and promotion, negotiation skills, and so on. For grassroots beneficiaries, the education level, medium of instruction, socio-economic factors are also accounted for, and the sessions are conducted through role plays, interactive sessions and other such participatory methods.
Entrepreneurship Awareness Session
Awareness sessions are intermittently conducted on entrepreneurship and related topics. The purpose of these one to two hour sessions is to create awareness about entrepreneurship being a viable avenue of livelihood generation.
Participants of the workshops and awareness sessions include women from self help groups, youth from local villages, students from local colleges and ITI’s, IITGN’s outsourced workers and their family members, beneficiaries of NGO and organizations working with women in rural areas and so on.
Training OF Trainers
This workshop, aimed at developing trainers interested in promoting entrepreneurship development, includes sessions on teaching methodologies in addition to covering the core aspects of entrepreneurship education. Participants include IITGN employees and their family members, retired professionals from the surrounding areas, staff from ITI, local schools and colleges, NGO workers and so on.
Business plan mentoring is offered to individuals who have participated in the entrepreneurship development workshops. Information about various funding schemes, programs and institutions are also provided to aspiring entrepreneurs, when requested.
Vocational Skills Training Program
The NEEV program conducts vocational training course for youth from local villages. The two-month long course includes basic skills in trades such as carpentry, fitting, wiring, plumbing, tin-smithy, machining and welding, modules on business skills, soft skills as well as factory visits to local industries. The participants are taught to make products such as wooden stool, bench, 3-tier metal stand, metal folding cot, grill section, extension board, photo frame, laptop table, grain storage tin, industrial tray, machine tools, gears and parts, and so on. The purpose is to make employment or entrepreneurial opportunities more readily accessible to local youth, and also encourage them to pursue advanced training in the trades of their choice.
Stitching Training Project
The NEEV program facilitates specialized training sessions to support livelihood generation in the local areas. In one such project, the curtains of the IITGN hostels were stitched by women from the villages adjoining IITGN after an initial training period of two weeks.
These include events such as field visit to areas identified for potential outreach activities to gauge skills such as entrepreneurial skills, vocational skills, employability skills, of the populace of these areas; factory visit organized for beneficiaries interested in learning more about the workings of a professional set-up and so on.
