The Conference

 

The Design For a Billion conference is a cross-disciplinary forum to bring together researchers, educators, practitioners, entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to discuss the implications and future of mass impact design. Conversations interweave the theoretical and the empirical, research and applications, market pragmatics and social idealism.

 

The conference addresses broad themes of design, business and policy. The conference will host several eminent keynote speakers and distinguished speakers who will speak on a wide range of topics and will share case studies on products / services / trends that will impact a billion people in the coming years.

The Keynote Speakers

Klaus Krippendorff is Gregory Bateson Professor for Cybernetics, Language, and Culture at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA.  He was awarded the Norbert Wiener Medal in Cybernetics in 2001 by the American Society for Cybernetics for his contributions to cybernetics. He received the ICA Fellows Book Award for his influential text Content Analysis, An Introduction to Its Methodology.  He received the Norbert Wiener/Hermann Schmidt Prize from the German Society for Cybernetics and German Society for Pedagogy and Information, at the University of Vienna in 2004.

 Wolfgang Jonas is professor for Designwissenschaft at Braunschweig University of Arts, Institute for Transportation Design, Germany. His research interests are design theory and design methods from a systemic perspective, systems thinking, scenario planning, research through design and their application in the fields of mobility and social transformation.

Gjoko Muratovski has over 20 years of international, multidisciplinary design and branding experience spanning Europe and Asia, USA and Australia. In addition to holding a PhD in Design Research and Corporate Communication Strategies (with focus on Branding), Dr Muratovski is also trained in Visual Communications, Industrial Design, Architectural Design, Interior Design, and Furniture Design & Manufacturing. He currently serves as Senior Manager at the School of Art and Design, Head of the Communication Design Department, and Director of the DESIS Lab Auckland. He is Chairman of the International Research Conference: Design for Business: Melbourne International Design Week) and Area Chair for Design and for Business at the Popular Culture Association of Australia and New Zealand.

Jean-Joseph Boillot is an Advisor to the CEPII Business Club on large emerging economies like India and China and is a recognized expert with many public institutions and private businesses. He is co-Chairman of the Euro-India Economic & Business Group (EIEBG), member of the editorial committee of Alternatives Economiques, of the think-tank Confrontation Europe, and Scientific advisor at ISEG. He holds a PhD in economics and is Professor of Social Sciences. He is author of 20 books, including India for Dummies and Chindiafrique, China, India and Africa will be the world tomorrow.

Suresh Sethi has built a unique and extensive track record in design, innovation and brand leadership. He is currently the Vice President, Whirlpool Design, and he works consistently to align the creative process with business. He believes that the key to innovation lies in consumer experience and designers are critical in the creative economy.

Satish Gokhale founded Design Directions Pvt Ltd in 1988. He combines design, technology, aesthetics and relevant materials to create a major impact on industrial, medical, electronic and consumer products. He has till date, successfully designed and launched over 650 products in the Indian and international markets for a host of clients, ranging from the small scale sector to heavy industry. Gokhlae is a recipient of several local and international awards, served as jury member on several design award committees and is a member of the India Design Council.

Mr. Satish Gokhale

Prof. Shashank Mehta is on the faculty of Industrial Design at the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. Prof Mehta has taught at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, spanning various design disciplines. He has worked extensively in the area of technology and design fusion, sustainability and indigenous innovations. As a qualified mechanical engineer and product designer, he has added to his professional expertise by working as an engineer, designer and production in-charge with small and large scale industries and the craft and social sectors as well. Prof Mehta is project head of the Design Clinic Scheme for MSMEs, a unique and ambitious design intervention scheme for the country’s large MSME sector.

Ashwini is co-founder of Elephant, India's largest independent integrated design consultancy with offices in India, Singapore & Germany. Her company represents India at the Design Alliance Asia and Dshpande is part of the core group that steers the consortium of design companies across 13 Asian countries. She has done award winning work for global brands, including Daimler, Unilever, P&G, Akzo-Nobel, Mars & Heinz and Indian ones, such as Britannia, Piramal, Nirlep, Titan, Godrej, Venky’s & Wipro. Her awards include Designomics, CII Design Excellence, AsiaStar Packaging Excellence & eight times Global ReBrand (USA) and the most recent VMRD Retail Design Gold.

Sanjay Kumar is currently Professor of Operations Management at the Management Development Institute, Gurgaon, India. Dr Kumar is a renowned researcher and expert in the field of Operations, New Product Development, Integrated Manufacturing and ERP systems. In 2008, his research project titled “Effect of subcontractor relationship ‘closeness’ on MES integration requirements for shop floor visibility in distributed manufacturing” won the First SAP research and Innovation Award, India. Dr Kumar has been a member of the FICCI “National Manufacturing Committee”between 2010 and 2012.

Design & Innovation @IITGN

 

The Design and Innovation Centre (DIC) at IIT Gandhinagar promotes collaborative research and educational initiatives on design and innovation. The discipline of design encourages students to develop innovative products & services through curricular and extra-curricular projects. The focus of the Center is to develop innovations that have a strong impact both locally and globally. The Center fosters a multidisciplinary approach and supports projects of an innovative nature and collaborates with globally acclaimed institutions. The projects at the DIC have a strong industry and social focus and follow a human-centric design philosophy. DIC projects range from social innovations, ecological design, to frugal engineering, among others.

 

One of the principal objectives of the DIC is to promote design and innovation in the IITGN curriculum. The institute has introduced a compulsory design course for all undergraduates in the second year which culminates in real-life design projects, such as a pesticide spraying device for farmers to prevent toxic exposure; redesign of vending cart for small entrepreneurs; portable water, human power battery, toilets for Indian railways, smart chair for public hospitals for collection of biomedical data, innovative prosthetic legs for the physically challenged, etc.
