IIT Gandhinagar currently offers 4-year B. Tech. programmes in Chemical, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and M. Tech. programmes in Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and in Materials Engineering. In addition, the Institute offers the students the option to do a Minor in Computer Science or Management along with their B. Tech. degrees. It also offers Ph.D. progammes in several disciplines in Engineering (Chemical, Civil, Computer Science, Electrical, Mechanical, and in Materials Engineering), Sciences (Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics) and Humanities & Social Sciences (Cognitive Science, English, Philosophy, Sociology and others).

IITGN goes many steps beyond the call and definition of a technology Institute, it aims to create excellence in science, technology as well as the Humanities and Social Sciences and thereby create rounded and nuanced minds.

  • Chemistry Discipline

    Chemistry Discipline

Chemistry at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar has an emphasis on pure sciences with potential application areas in the area of green chemistry, biopolymers, sensing, electrochemistry and other optical applications. The goals of the research encompasses the disciplines of chemistry and biology involving synthesis of natural product analogues, modified nucleic acids for development of bioanalytical assays and sensor systems, isolation and characterization of chromophores from natural sources, synthesis and functionalization of nanomaterials, synthesis of macrocyclic systems such as porphyrnoids for sensing applications, photophysical and photochemical studies of synthesized organic solutes in ionic liquid media, electron transfer, development of natural food coloring agents, enzymology of redox processes and in the research involving electrochemistry, materials and catalysis. The research is funded by major funding agencies (DST, CSIR) and supported by institute. Faculty is also actively involved in teaching a number of core courses pertaining to both undergraduate and graduate students.

IIT Gandhinagar has acquired and/ placed orders for state-of-the-art research equipment such as Mass Spectrometer (Waters, Synpat G2S), 500 MHz NMR Instrument (Bruker); Powder XRD (Bruker), Multimode 8 Atomic Force Microscope, (Bruker), Scanning Electron Microscope (JEOL) for sample characterization and analysis. The NMR instrument is solid state ready and equipped for a wide range of nuclei. Other major facilities include UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Thermofisher is 10 FTIR spectrometer, Horiba Jobin Yvon Spectrofluorimeter and High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (Agilent). Chemistry has 24-hour access to Scifinder and online subscription to many journal publications.

  • Mathematics Discipline

    Mathematics Discipline

Faculty members in the discipline are actively engaged in teaching and research in some of the frontline areas in mathematics. Although the Institute is relatively young, it envisions:
    ● creation of one of the excellent groups on mathematics in the country devoted to both the fundamentals as well as the applications aspects of mathematics;
    ● attainment of world class in terms of excellence in research and teaching of mathematics.

The faculty is presently active in the areas of analysis, differential equations, numerical analysis – particularly as applied to partial differential equations, and optimization theory. Currently, the discipline has faculty strength of 5 members, which is likely to grow in the near future. At present the research interests of faculty members in the discipline comprise non-smooth optimization theory, variational inequalities and variational relations with applications, nonlinear functional analysis, elliptic partial differential equations, hp/spectral element methods, tensor decompositions, and numerical solutions of partial differential equations. Faculty members are actively involved in collaborating with members of other disciplines in the Institute in their joint research endeavors. Ph.D. programme has already been initiated and research scholars are working for their Ph.D.

M.Sc. programme in Mathematics, which is intended to be initiated in July, 2013, aside from exposing students to the fundamentals of domains of traditional mathematics such as algebra, topology and analysis will have many attractive novel features such as:
    ● emphasis on strong foundations
    ● versatility of available electives with interdisciplinary flavor
    ● emphasis on computational skills
    ● training in pedagogy of research with provision of two semester project.

  • Physics Discipline

    Physics Discipline

The Physics discipline at IIT Gandhinagar is home to exciting research in diverse areas of Physics such as Gravitational Wave astronomy, Quantum Gravity, Networks of Complex systems, Crystallography, Macro-molecular structure and Quantum Optics. Faculty members in this discipline are actively involved in research collaborations with peer groups across the world – including IndIGO consortium, LIGO Scientific Collaboration, University of Benha, University of Bergamo, Montana State University, IUCAA, International Centre for Theoretical Sciences, etc. There is a strong focus on inter-disciplinary research as well and several collaborations involving national and international institutes have developed that are being lead by faculty in the discipline. Research topics such as: developing algorithms for detection of astrophysical gravitational waves, studying modified gravity models and their implications in Cosmology, developing mathematical models to understand the spread of infectious diseases. dynamics of opinion formations, studying molecular mechanisms in living cells, etc. are pursued by faculty in this discipline and funded by external funding agencies like SERB as well as internally by IIT Gandhinagar. Research done in the discipline has been highlighted by several international news media.

The focus of the 2 year M.Sc. program is to develop a deep understanding in core areas of Theoretical and Experimental physics, as well as to take advantage of the flexibility of our modern curriculum to introduce a wide range of advanced topics to the students. The flexibility allows students to choose advanced electives and chalk out a path towards a specialization of their choice. The 2 year program is unique in devoting a signigicant component of the minimum credit requirement towards developing research skills. Our program is geared towards creating outstanding students with a solid training in analytical, experimental and computational methods. The institute has a memorandum of understanding with Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) which has a very strong research program and expertise in many areas of Physics and Astronomy. M.Sc. students enrolled at IITGN will have a unique opportunity to interact directly with faculty members at PRL and take advantage of their world class laboratory facilities. We also envisage PRL faculty teaching core and specialized topics in the M.Sc. program. The institute also hosts a number of visiting scholars from world-reknowned Universities. Students will benefit from close academic interactions with such scholars.

The institute has 24 hour online access to many Physics education and research journals, and more are added from time to time. Our library has an excellent collection of many modern and classic text/reference books. Large centralized experimental facilities like XRD, TEM, SEM etc. have already been setup in the institute. A high performance computational facility is also being developed, which includes multi-core as well as GPGPU computing facilities. The M.Sc. program will focus on training students at these computational and experimental facilities.
